Bashar Alzahabi, M.D., is a board-certified nephrologist with more than 25 years of experience treating patients with kidney disease in Effingham, Illinois. He is certified in both nephrology and internal medicine and is known for his patient-first approach and long-standing relationships with those in his care.

Dr. Alzahabi earned his medical degree from Damascus University in Syria in 1988, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. During his time there, he completed an internship rotation in multiple clinical areas at Damascus University Hospital. He later completed an externship in internal medicine at McLaren General Hospital in Flint, Michigan, followed by a three-year residency and internship in internal medicine at Lincoln Hospital, New York Medical College. He then completed a two-year nephrology fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he also conducted research on TGF-B in diabetic nephropathy.

Also, Dr. Alzahabi has authored research published in journals such as the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and Diabetes. He has been fully licensed in Illinois since 1996. His clinical interests include chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, hypertension and all forms of dialysis.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Alzahabi enjoys hiking and traveling with his wife and their three children. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, Renal Physicians Association and Syrian American Medical Society.
